'When Imperfection is Almost Perfect'
I almost got a hole-in-one last week while on vacation. I have never come that close before and it is highly unlikely, given my skill or lack of skill as a golfer, that I will ever come that close again. The near great moment unfolded this way. Standing on the 16th tee at Mountainaire Golf Course in West Jefferson, N.C. I pulled a pitching wedge from my bag with the intent of lofting the ball 110 yards and softly landing it on the green. It didn't go as I had planned. Instead of hitting under the ball I hit into the side of the ball. In golf language I 'skulled it.' The result: I lined drived the ball straight at the green. The good news, however, was that the ball hit into the side of the hill that the green was on and that slowed the ball down enough that it rolled onto the green instead of going well past . My oldest son with whom I was playing simply said, "Good miss hit."
I didn't have any idea until we got closer to the green that my imperfect shot almost resulted in perfection.
Well I am not sure what a normal person would have thought about the moment, but being a preacher it occured to me that God quite often takes our imperfection and perfects us through God's love. I John 4: 12 reads "....if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us." You may have said to yourself after helping someone; "I think I got more out of that than she/he did." I deeply believe that those moments of caring and sharing are one of the ways God takes us, as imperfect as we are, and perfects us through God's love.
P.S. We almost got struck by lightning on the 17th tee (No joke!), but that's a story for another time.
